This one is Bella and she was eaten by predators the first month we were here. We were so sad because she was the first one to ever lay an egg for us. You will notice how CLEAN everything is...not normal for a chicken coop at all. She had such a funny bright expression on her face...and I was glad we caught it.
She is pretty! I'm sorry to hear her life ended badly. Are your chickens grain fed or do they eat bugs and scraps and stuff? I'd love some of those eggs. We use tons of them here!
Our eggs are just delicious! My chickens eat grains like seeds, wheat, and other high protein grains, Layena crumbles, and cracked corn while they are locked up in the coop and whenever they happen by the barn during the day. They eat bugs the whole rest of the day and grass and little green weeds. During the spring, summer, and fall I hardly ever had to buy grain but during the winter I have to buy several bags. Now I have 25 new chickens of which six are small bantams. We are really going through the feed...but they have also graduated to true free ranging. They were afraid to leave the coop at first..but I'm so proud of them..they just take off running into the grass and have a great time all day picking and scratching. I hope by this summer to have around 12-14 dozen eggs per week! If you would like to see my eggs, their is a picture posted of my very first dozen in the week of 4/8 to 4/15 posts.
Oh, I'm so sorry that Bella's life ended that way. I'm glad you have this great picture to remember your first egg layer by. Oh, and I don't think I have told you yet how delicious those eggs were!
It's genetic Shona...some of us were just meant to be farmers... Andrew and I are both that way. He's my number one chicken 'co-hort'(just don't tell him I told you that!) He's a 'closet' chicken lover. :o)

I'm happy to hear the others are doing well. I'd love to try some of their eggs sometime!
LOL, all this chicken discussion is funny. Donna, you crack me up and I love you for it. Poor old Bella, life is brutal for some.
